Re-introducing The Wild Beginnings Collection
Caitlin McCrackenShare
Hello there!
When I designed my first sweater, I never imagined it would grow into a full collection. But here we are. Today, I’m sharing the story behind The Wild Beginnings Collection and how it all started with a personal project I almost kept for myself.
After graduating with a textiles degree in 2023, I felt a bit uncertain about my skills, since most of the world was in lockdown the year before. I missed out on vital hands-on learning during that unpredictable time and this left me doubting my skills. Honestly, I had no intention of starting a knitwear brand so soon.
Then, something unexpected happened.
While working at The Designerie in Bushmills for a year, the wonderful staff encouraged me to bring some of my knitwear into the shop. It took a lot of gentle persuasion, but I finally took the leap.
That’s when I created my very first design...
The Bell Sweater.
I designed it originally for myself, which made it feel more like a custom piece than a product. But soon enough, it caught the attention of customers and is now our best-selling item.
As I began dreaming up the idea of starting a brand, I found myself stuck on one surprisingly tricky question: what yarn should I use? It might sound simple, but for any knitter, it’s a crucial decision. The right yarn defines everything- how it performs on my knitting machine, the texture and colours it produces, and most importantly, how the finished garment feels, wears, and lasts. I’ll admit, I may have danced around the decision for a while (call it perfectionism… or maybe just procrastination). But eventually, I knew in my gut that the answer was simple: it had to be authentic Irish wool. Something rooted in place, quality, and tradition.
Once I made that decision, everything else began to fall into place. I work with natural wool spun in Donegal, renowned for its rich heritage and subtle flecks of colour. It’s a material that doesn’t just feel beautiful- it is beautiful, from the fibre to the story it carries.
From there, I begin knitting on my manual knitting machine- a quiet, hands-on process that’s equal parts technical and intuitive. Each piece is shaped using the "fully fashioned" technique which means shaping each panel manually on the machine, so no cutting and no waste. It’s a slow, intentional craft that I am constantly growing and refining my skills- in fact, I don't think I will ever stop learning the intricacies of my specialism.
This debut collection is called “The Wild Beginnings” for a reason. It marks the start of something deeply personal; born out of uncertainty, intuition, and a quiet sort of courage. I created the first piece, The Bell Sweater, with no pressure and no business plan (oops), just a desire to make something feel like me.
I didn’t expect it to become my best-seller.
Building on the success of my first design, I found inspiration to create two more pieces: The Cosy Cardi and The Tie Cami. This trio of designs comes together seamlessly, offering a blend of elegance, comfort, and a perfect summer piece. Each garment carries the same spirit: thoughtfully crafted, deeply rooted in storytelling, and designed with intention. The silhouettes are modern and effortlessly wearable, while subtle nods to tradition shine through in the distinctive Donegal fleck.
More than just clothing, these pieces are a reflection of what I value: craftsmanship, longevity, and connection. I want you to feel the care in each stitch, the weight of the wool and the intention behind the details. In a world that often prioritises speed and volume, this collection is my quiet resistance- a reminder that slowing down is essential.
If you’ve made it this far, thank you. It means the world to share the story behind my designs. Whether you’re here out of curiosity, looking for something truly special to wear, or simply appreciating the craft, I’m so glad you’re part of this journey.
I’d love for you to explore the collection, learn about each piece, and maybe find one that speaks to you.
Shop the collection and join the newsletter for early access, behind-the-scenes content, and thoughtful updates- only the good stuff of course, never too much.
