What Makes Merino Wool So Special?
Caitlin McCrackenShare
Hello there!
When you hear "merino wool" what pops into your head? Perhaps it's cosy winter sweaters or thick ski socks. But what actually makes merino wool so special and why do I use it in all of my knitwear?
Let's take a closer look...
A Natural Wonder
Merino wool is a natural fibre grown by Merino sheep, who thrive on just sunshine, water, fresh air, and grass. Each year, they grow a brand-new fleece, making wool a fully renewable and sustainable resource.
Soft, Not Scratchy
Unlike traditional wool, Merino fibres are much finer and softer, meaning they don’t feel coarse or itchy against your skin. It's lightweight, breathable, and comfortable enough for everyday wear- even for those with sensitive skin.
The Benefits of Merino Wool:
Merino wool is more than just soft, it’s packed with natural properties that make it an ideal sustainable option:
- 100% biodegradable
- Naturally breathable
- Stain resistant
- Fire retardant
- Temperature regulating
- Odour resistant
Locally spun, Crafted to Last
All the Merino wool I use is 100% natural and spun locally in County Donegal, Ireland. It’s blended with colourful flecks to give each strand that beautifully rugged, traditional Irish texture. This yarn is super durable and made to stand the test of time- perfect for garments that are meant to be worn, loved, and handed down.
Whether you’re wearing one of my pieces for warmth, comfort, or just a bit of everyday luxury, know that it’s made with care- from sheep to stitch.
