Caring for Your Knitwear: A Small Act of Slow Living
Caitlin McCrackenShare
Hi everyone!
We have all been there- chucking clothes into the washing machine without looking at the care label and revealing a shrunken down version of your jumper that will now fit an 8 year old child!
After many months, I realise that I haven't written a post about how to actually care for your Caitlin McCracken Knit, to keep it in its original size. Caring for your knits is one of those little rituals that makes a big difference. With just a few mindful habits, you can help your wool pieces stay soft, keep their shape, and last for many years to come.
Our garments are crafted from premium 100% wool from Donegal, a fibre known for its naturally sustainable and resilient properties. Wool naturally breathes, repels odours, and holds its shape far better than synthetics. But like all good things, it deserves a little care and attention to help it last. I like to think of knitwear care as an act of appreciation, a way to connect with the craftsmanship behind your garment.
Here is how I recommend caring for your Caitlin McCracken knit, so you can cherish it for many years to come.
Washing
You rarely need to wash your wool sweater- in fact, less is more. Wool is naturally antibacterial and freshens easily between wears. I always suggest wearing a light base layer underneath, which you can wash more frequently.
When it’s time for a clean:
- Fill a basin with cool water and add a gentle wool detergent.
- Let your knit soak for about 10–15 minutes.
- Gently squeeze the garment to clean- no scrubbing or wringing! It’s all about being gentle on those natural fibres.
Top Tip: Always use cool water; otherwise, the wool will shrink or felt.
Drying
After washing, lay your sweater flat on a clean towel and let it air dry. This keeps its shape beautifully and avoids stretching.
To speed things up a little, roll your knit in a towel and gently press out any extra water- no twisting or wringing. And whatever you do, don’t tumble dry. The heat can cause the fibres to shrink or lose shape.
Top Tip: While it’s still damp, gently reshape your knit to its original form. It’s a simple trick that makes a big difference once it’s dry.
Storing
When it’s time to put your knit away, always fold it rather than hang it- hanging can stretch the shoulders over time. Store in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight, and if you’re packing it away for a while, use breathable cotton bags to protect it.
Top Tip: Slip a small lavender sachet or cedar ball in with your knitwear- it’ll deter moths and leave a light, fresh scent.
The Beauty of Careful Craftsmanship
Taking time to care for your knitwear is part of the slow fashion philosophy. By washing gently, drying thoughtfully, and storing mindfully, you extend the life of your garment and honour the craftsmanship behind it.
Every Caitlin McCracken knit is made to be loved, worn, and cherished. With the right care, it truly can be a piece you’ll treasure forever.
